da jogodeouro: According to Sky Sports, Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for £70m.
da bet sport: Blues manager Antonio Conte had been targeting a summer swoop for Everton’s Romelu Lukaku, but the west London outfit missed out on the Belgium international as he completed an initial £75m move to Premier League rivals Manchester United on Monday.
That has left the Italian boss having to look elsewhere as he looks for a replacement for Diego Costa, after informing the Spaniard by text that he wasn’t part of his plans for next season.
While Sky Sports also says the Premier League holders are keen on Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, they could be tempted to instead do a deal for the Dortmund attacker, who is also a target for AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain following another prolific season for the Bundesliga giants.
Here are three reasons Aubameyang would prove to be a better addition than Lukaku for Chelsea…
Goals
Aubameyang has proven over the last six seasons that he is a prolific goalscorer, and there is no reason why he wouldn’t bring that form to the Premier League.
The 28-year-old scored 39 goals in 83 appearances in all competitions in his final two campaigns with Saint-Etienne before he moved to Dortmund, and his statistics since have been nothing short of sensational.
The Gabon international has netted 120 times in 189 outings in total for the Bundesliga side, and he scored 40 in 46 matches last term.
With that finishing ability, there is no doubt that he could prove to be an upgrade and more effective than Lukaku.
European experience
While Lukaku is yet to make an appearance in the Champions League and as such is untested at that level, Aubameyang certainly has more experience than the Belgian.
He has featured in Europe’s elite club competition 26 times – scoring 11 goals – while he also netted 11 times in 14 Europa League appearances during the 2015/16 campaign.
That knowledge of what is required to find the net on a regular basis would certainly be useful for Chelsea next term as they look to make an impact on their return to the Champions League, as well as retaining their Premier League title.
Performing on the big stage
One of the criticisms of Lukaku in recent years is the fact that he struggled to score against the big sides during his time with Everton, but the same certainly can’t be said for Aubameyang.
The 28-year-old scored twice in two Champions League fixtures against Real Madrid last season, while he showed he can also cope when the pressure is on after netting a hat-trick in the second leg of his side’s round of 16 tie against Benfica.
In addition, the Gabon international also netted the crucial penalty as Dortmund won their first trophy in five years when they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 in the German Cup final.
